A Guide To Water at work

The Problem

Most people don’t drink enough water- ask any nutritionist and they’ll tell you! It is recommended that we drink at least 8 glasses of pure, fresh water each day, as it is the only suitable medium for the body’s water needs. However many of us, with our busy lifestyles, only find time to drink around half that or, put off by the unpleasant taste of tap water, substitute water with tea or coffee which actually dehydrate your body further!

The high pressure environment of the workplace makes it especially

important that we get enough water. Dehydration is the prime cause of heat illness and is an especially serious issue for those of us who work wearing protective clothing or with our hands.

Industry estimates place the number of workers for whom heat stress is a potential safety and health hazard at 5 million to 10 million. For these workers and others, access to clean drinking water is a serious issue -one that affects their health and productivity.

Even in an office, restaurant or school, where heat illness is perhaps less likely, we are all at risk from dehydration. All of these combine to make the workplace a very unpleasant place indeed!
Symptoms of dehydration include:

  • Fatigue
  • Loss of concentration
  • Increased irritability
  • Headaches
  • Reduced productivity
  • Migraine
  • Depression
  • Some mental problems
  • Hiatus hernia/ulcers
  • Abdominal pain (indigestion)
  • Gall bladder problems/stones
  • Tumours
  • Arthritis
  • Kidney problems
  • Colitis
  • Constipation
  • Lymphatic problems
  • Weight gain
  • Angina
  • Musculo-skeletal pain
  • Hypertension - high blood pressure
  • Skin problems
  • Asthma triggers

All of these symptoms can work to decrease the productivity of your company, and, due to increased absenteeism, increase costs.
The Histamine Link Explored (here comes the science bit!).

The role that Histamine plays as an agent is our antibacterial, antiviral, anti-foreign agent defence systems is well known (or at least its nemeses, anti-histamine tablets and creams are). However, it also acts as a sensor regulator of water metabolism and its distribution in the body. When the body is short of water, it increases the production of the neurotransmitter histamine. It is well recognised that people suffering from asthma and other allergic reactions have increased amounts of histamine within their body tissues. At a normal level of water content in the body, these defence systems are maintained at imperceptible or unexaggerated

levels. In a dehydrated state, histamine activity vastly increases to control water regulation; this triggers the secondary effect of an increased chance of exaggerated reactions from the defence systems of the body. So you can see that dehydration is intrinsically linked to allergies and other illnesses. You can vastly improve your well-being by simply drinking a few glasses of water a day!
